{"id":12615,"date":"2018-08-21T09:06:24","date_gmt":"2018-08-21T09:06:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cells4life.com\/?page_id=12615"},"modified":"2018-11-20T17:47:49","modified_gmt":"2018-11-20T17:47:49","slug":"uk-based-clinical-trial-treat-crohns-stem-cells","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cells4life.com\/us\/2018\/08\/uk-based-clinical-trial-treat-crohns-stem-cells\/","title":{"rendered":"UK based clinical trial to treat Crohn&#8217;s with stem cells"},"content":{"rendered":"[et_pb_section bb_built=&#8221;1&#8243;][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.100&#8243; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221;]\n<p>A new clinical trial will see hospitals from across the country come together in a bid to treat Crohn\u2019s disease with stem cell therapy.<\/p>\n<p>The new ASTIClite trial, led by Queen Mary University of London and Barts Health NHS trust, follows on from a 2015 study that found stem cells could improve patients\u2019 quality of life.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers will now attempt to treat the source of the disease, rather than the symptoms, by obliterating patients\u2019 immune systems with chemotherapy and then administering stem cells.<\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_3&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.100&#8243; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221;]\n<h3>What is Crohn\u2019s disease?<\/h3>\n<p>Crohn\u2019s disease is a condition that causes inflammation in the digestive system and leads to the formation of fistulae, which are abnormal connections between organs.<\/p>\n<p>People with Crohn\u2019s disease suffer from a range of debilitating symptoms &#8211; including diarrhoea, bleeding ulcers, severe pain, bloating, cramping, weight loss, and anaemia.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, gut inflammation spreads to other parts of body \u2013 including the joints and eyes. The condition is incurable.<\/p>\n<h3>How is Crohn\u2019s disease currently treated?<\/h3>\n<p>Currently, patients with Crohn\u2019s disease take drugs to reduce inflammation and suppress their immune system. In some cases, surgery is required to remove the affected area of the bowel.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, patients become less receptive to medication as time goes on.<\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_3&#8243;][et_pb_divider _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.100&#8243; color=&#8221;#ffffff&#8221; show_divider=&#8221;off&#8221; \/][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.100&#8243; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;10px|10px|10px|10px&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;10px|10px|10px|10px&#8221; border_radii=&#8221;on|5px|5px|5px|5px&#8221; border_color_all=&#8221;#1a3971&#8243; border_width_all=&#8221;2px&#8221;]\n<h3>Crohn\u2019s disease in the UK<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>250,000 people suffer from Crohn\u2019s in the UK<\/li>\n<li>Young people are more likely to be affected<\/li>\n<li>Since 2000, the amount of people requiring treatment for Crohn\u2019s has quadrupled<\/li>\n<li>35% of patients will have 1 or 2 relapses<\/li>\n<li>145 people per 100,000<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.100&#8243; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221;]\n<h3>What does the ASTIClite trial involve?<\/h3>\n<p>The trial is designed to reduce gut inflammation through stem cell transplants, which completely reset patients\u2019 immune systems.<\/p>\n<h3>How it works\u2026<\/h3>\n<ol style=\"color: #01a1c5;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #4f4d4e;\">Patients receive chemotherapy and hormone treatment to mobilise stem cells<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #4f4d4e;\">Stem cells are extracted from their blood<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #4f4d4e;\">Chemotherapy is administered to deplete their immune system<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #4f4d4e;\">Stem cells are re-introduced into the blood stream<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #4f4d4e;\">The transplant creates new immune cells, which create a new immune system.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This new immune system should accept the patient\u2019s gut, and inflammation should subside.<\/p>\n<p>Although not a cure, treatment therefore offers hope of dramatically improving quality of life for Crohn\u2019s sufferers around the globe. The same method is also being tested for the treatment of multiple sclerosis.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #01a1c5;\"><em>\u201cStem cell therapies are an important, active and growing area of research with great potential,\u201d<\/em><\/span> said Professor Tom Walley, Director of the NIHR Evaluation, Trials and Studies programmes, which funded the trial. <span style=\"color: #01a1c5;\"><em>\u201cThere are early findings showing a role for stem cells in replacing damaged tissue. In Crohn\u2019s disease, this approach could offer real benefits for the clinical care and long term health of patients.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.100&#8243; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221;]\n<h3>Stem cells and Crohn\u2019s around the world\u2026<\/h3>\n<ul style=\"color: #01a1c5;\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul style=\"color: #01a1c5;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #4f4d4e;\">In Thailand, doctors are using haematopoietic mesenchymal stem cells to \u201cpermanently\u201d treat Crohn\u2019s disease. MSCs, taken from patients\u2019 bone marrow, shift the body from producing pro-inflammatory cytokines to beneficial anti-inflammatory cytokines. Therapy takes place over 14-16 nights, with 2-6 mesenchymal infusions per treatment stage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #4f4d4e;\">The European Commission approved a new stem cell treatment called Alofisel in April 2018. The therapy uses adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells to treat Crohn\u2019s disease, and was found to be 42% more efficacious than standard
