{"id":12777,"date":"2021-04-11T06:04:11","date_gmt":"2021-04-11T06:04:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cells4life.com\/?p=12777"},"modified":"2023-08-09T12:52:50","modified_gmt":"2023-08-09T12:52:50","slug":"stem-cell-therapy-for-parkinsons-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cells4life.com\/us\/2021\/04\/stem-cell-therapy-for-parkinsons-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Stem cell therapy for Parkinson&#8217;s disease"},"content":{"rendered":"[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]\n<p>Researchers at Kyoto University\u2019s <em>Centre for iPS Cell Research and Application<\/em> in Japan are moving ahead with the world\u2019s first application of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to treat Parkinson\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p>The team, led by neurosurgeon Jun Takahashi, will now engage in a limited clinical trial to test the potential side effects.<\/p>\n<p>Osaka based drug maker Sumitomo Dainippon Pharma Co Ltd <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has lined itself up to manufacture and start selling cellular medicine based on the data from these clinical trials by 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This development comes as a number of clinical trials of iPS cell-based treatments are underway worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;2_3,1_3&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_3&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]\n<h3>What is Parkinson\u2019s disease?<\/h3>\n<p>Parkinson\u2019s is a progressive neurological condition marked by tremors, muscular rigidity, and slow, imprecise movement.<\/p>\n<p>This condition falls under &#8220;movement disorders&#8221; such as <a href=\"https:\/\/cells4life.com\/cerebral-palsy-and-stem-cells\/\">Cerebral Palsy<\/a>, Ataxia, Huntington&#8217;s disease and many more which are know to worsen with time.<\/p>\n<h3>The treatment<\/h3>\n<p>Treatment will see scientists take iPSCs from healthy people, match them with patients, then induce the cells to become dopaminergic progenitors.<\/p>\n<p>These progenitors will then be injected into a brain region \u2013 called the \u201cputamen\u201d \u2013 that is known to have a major part in the neural degeneration linked with Parkinson\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p>More than 5 million cells will be transplanted into patients then left to develop into neurons. These neurons can replace the dopamine lost due to the effects of Parkinson\u2019s.<\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_3&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; background_color=&#8221;#00abc9&#8243; background_layout=&#8221;dark&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;10px|10px|10px|10px&#8221; border_radii=&#8221;on|5px|5px|5px|5px&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]\n<h4>What is dopamine?<\/h4>\n<p>Dopamine is a neurotransmitter responsible for transmitting signals between nerve cells (neurons) in the brain. <\/p>\n<p>Very few neurons make dopamine, and Parkinson\u2019s disease leads to the death of many of those that do. <\/p>\n<p>The decline in dopamine levels leads to Parkinson\u2019s disease symptoms, such as shaking and loss of motor function.<br \/>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]\n<h3>The impact<\/h3>\n<p>The new treatment is not a cure for Parkinson\u2019s disease and there is no apparent effect on damaged cognitive function.<br \/>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;2_3,1_3&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_3&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]However, it could offer a potentially longer-term treatment for the disease.
