{"id":1313,"date":"2015-05-05T08:58:15","date_gmt":"2015-05-05T08:58:15","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2016-05-10T09:57:44","modified_gmt":"2016-05-10T09:57:44","slug":"world-lupus-day-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cells4life.com\/us\/2015\/05\/world-lupus-day-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"World Lupus Day 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"body\">\n<p>Sunday is World Lupus Day. \u00a0We&#8217;re raising\u00a0awareness of Lupus and look at how stem cells are being researched to find a treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Lupus is an autoimmune disease. \u00a0An autoimmune disease results when the immune system attacks the body\u2019s own cells, in the case of Lupus it can affect the skin, joints and internal organs <sup>[1]<\/sup>. \u00a0Lupus is a poorly understood autoimmune disease; there are several different kinds of Lupus:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022Systemic lupus erythematosus \u2013 The most common kind of lupus<\/p>\n<p>\u2022Discoid lupus erythematosus \u2013 causes a rash that doesn\u2019t go away<\/p>\n<p>\u2022Sub-acute cutaneous lupus erythematosus \u2013 causes skin sores on parts of the body exposed to the sun<\/p>\n<p>\u2022Drug-induced lupus \u2013 can be caused by medications<\/p>\n<p>\u2022Neonatal lupus \u2013 a rare type of lupus that affects newborns. <sup>[2]<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>While it is thought that genes play a role in causing Lupus, the causes are widely unknown and it is thought that there are many triggers besides genetics alone.<\/p>\n<p>There are treatments available to patients who suffer from Lupus, but as yet there is no cure. \u00a0Stem cell transplants are being investigated by researchers as a possible treatment for Lupus but as yet this treatment is not available to the general public.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><sup>[1]<\/sup> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/Conditions\/lupus\/Pages\/Introduction.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/Conditions\/lupus\/Pages\/Introduction.aspx<\/a><\/p>\n<p><sup>[2]<\/sup> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niams.nih.gov\/Health_Info\/Lupus\/lupus_ff.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.niams.nih.gov\/Health_Info\/Lupus\/lupus_ff.asp<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field_image_miniblog\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sunday is World Lupus Day. \u00a0We&#8217;re raising\u00a0awareness of Lupus and look at how stem cells are being researched to find a treatment.
