{"id":1318,"date":"2015-05-26T10:26:20","date_gmt":"2015-05-26T10:26:20","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2016-05-10T09:48:03","modified_gmt":"2016-05-10T09:48:03","slug":"muscular-dystrophy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cells4life.com\/us\/2015\/05\/muscular-dystrophy\/","title":{"rendered":"Muscular Dystrophy"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"body\">\n<p><strong>This week we are learning about muscular dystrophy and how cord blood stem cells could help sufferers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Muscular Dystrophy, also known as MD, is a hereditary condition which causes muscle weakness. \u00a0It is a progressive condition which means those with muscular dystrophy deteriorate as time goes by.<\/p>\n<p>There are several kinds of muscular dystrophy:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022Duchenne muscular dystrophy<\/p>\n<p>\u2022Myotonic dystrophy<\/p>\n<p>\u2022Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy<\/p>\n<p>\u2022Becker muscular dystrophy<\/p>\n<p>\u2022Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy<\/p>\n<p>\u2022Oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy<\/p>\n<p>\u2022Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy <sup>[1]<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>While muscular dystrophy tends to affect both sexes equally there are a couple of exceptions. \u00a0In the case of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, also known as DMD, boys are mainly affected. \u00a0However girls can be affected but they have a milder form<sup> [1]<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Becker muscular dystrophy, also known as BMD, is similar to Duchenne in the fact that it affects more boys than girls. \u00a0BMD also affects similar areas of the body; however, the symptoms tend to be less severe <sup>[1]<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy is rare, affecting just 233 out of 1.49 million males in Northern England in 2009 <sup>[2]<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Muscular dystrophy tends to run in families. \u00a0It is usually caused by inheriting a faulty gene from one or both parents <sup>[3]<\/sup>. \u00a0The faulty genes affected are those responsible for healthy muscle structure and function. \u00a0In those with MD, the faulty genes mean that the cells which would normally maintain muscles are no longer able to do so which leads to muscle weakness and progressive disability <sup>[3]<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately there is no cure for any kind of muscular dystrophy, current treatments aims to slow the progression of the illness <sup>[4]<\/sup>. \u00a0However, stem cell researchers are investing the role of cord blood in patients with MD. \u00a0One study took <a href=\"https:\/\/cells4life.com\/all-about-cord-blood-stem-cells\/\">stem cells<\/a> from umbilical cord blood and combined them with myoblasts from a patient with DMD. \u00a0The authors of the paper concluded that \u201cOur findings showed that umbilical cord blood CD34+ stem cells have the potential to interact with dystrophic muscle cells restoring the dystrophin expression of DMD cells in vitro.
