{"id":1340,"date":"2015-10-05T10:56:17","date_gmt":"2015-10-05T10:56:17","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2016-05-10T10:33:09","modified_gmt":"2016-05-10T10:33:09","slug":"breast-cancer-awareness-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cells4life.com\/us\/2015\/10\/breast-cancer-awareness-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Breast Cancer Awareness Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"body\">\n<p><strong>October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. \u00a0Here we look at breast cancer, the causes, the symptoms and how stem cells are being used in the fight against the illness.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Each year in the UK approximately 55,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer. \u00a0Breast cancer is often associated with women as it is predominantly women who are diagnosed with the illness but breast cancer also occurs in men too with around 350 men being diagnosed each year <sup>[1]<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and while more people are being diagnosed but in contrast survival rates are increasing; this could be because of improved treatment and earlier detection<sup>[1]<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, breast pain isn\u2019t usually a symptom of breast cancer. \u00a0Symptoms of breast cancer include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0a lump or area of thickened tissue in either breast<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0a change in the size or shape of one or both breasts<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0discharge from either of your nipples (which may be streaked with blood)<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0a lump or swelling in either of your armpits<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0dimpling on the skin of your breasts<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0a rash on or around your nipple<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0a change in the appearance of your nipple, such as becoming sunken into your breast<sup>[2]<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Treatment of breast cancer can vary, breast cancer is treated on a case by case basis. \u00a0In cases where intensive chemotherapy is used, a <a href=\"https:\/\/cells4life.com\/2015\/06\/transplant-awareness-2015\/\" target=\"_blank\">stem cell transplant <\/a>may be required to replace damaged bone marrow.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n[1] <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breastcancercare.org.uk\/news\/media-centre\/facts-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.breastcancercare.org.uk\/news\/media-centre\/facts-statistics<\/a><\/p>\n[2] <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/Conditions\/Cancer-of-the-breast-female\/Pages\/Symptoms.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/Conditions\/Cancer-of-the-breast-female\/Pages\/Symptoms.aspx<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. \u00a0Here we look at breast cancer, the causes, the symptoms and how stem cells are being used in the fight against the illness.
