We are going to go through the most common allergies in this blog to make sure you as a parent are prepped and ready.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is an allergy?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Just a quick bit of medical information.<\/p>\n<p>An allergy and intolerance are not the same things, and it is important to distinguish between the two.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What\u2019s an intolerance? <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>An\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/food-intolerance\/#:~:text=A%20food%20intolerance%20is%20caused,such%20as%20cheese%20and%20yoghurts.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intolerance<\/a>\u00a0to a type of food is an inability to digest the foodstuff in question such as a gluten or lactose intolerance. These are not caused by the immune system so do not cause the same reaction as an allergy. Common symptoms of an intolerance are\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Non-life-threatening stomach issues or pain<\/li>\n<li>Bloating<\/li>\n<li>Gas<\/li>\n<li>Nausea<\/li>\n<li>Heartburn<\/li>\n<li>Headaches and migraines<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All of which are uncomfortable but should work their way out.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What\u2019s an allergy? <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>An\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/allergies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allergy<\/a>\u00a0is an adverse reaction to something that is usually harmless such as pet hair, certain medications and pollen. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sneezing or runny nose<\/li>\n<li>Pain or tenderness around the eyes, cheeks or forehead<\/li>\n<li>Itchy skin or rash (hives)<\/li>\n<li>Swelling of the face, eyes and throat<\/li>\n<li>Coughing, breathlessness or wheezing<\/li>\n<li>Feeling or being sick<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Among others.<\/p>\n<p>An allergic reaction can be dangerous if it is severe enough.<\/p>\n<p>There are also 4 types of allergic reactions as described by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.advancedentdenver.com\/blog\/four-types-of-allergic-reactions\/#:~:text=When%20your%20body%20is%20hypersensitive,manifest%20differently%20in%20each%20person.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Advanced ENT &amp; Allergy Center:<\/a>\u00a0Anaphylactic, cytotoxic, immunocomplex and cell-mediated. The most common of which is anaphylactic.<\/p>\n<p>Both intolerances and allergies can be minor to severe and if you are in any way concerned always consult a doctor.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are the common allergies in babies?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>These are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.advancedentdenver.com\/blog\/four-types-of-allergic-reactions\/#:~:text=When%20your%20body%20is%20hypersensitive,manifest%20differently%20in%20each%20person.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">common allergies<\/a>\u00a0found in babies and children.<\/p>\n<h3>Milk<\/h3>\n<p>Unlike lactose intolerance, babies can have an allergic reaction to the protein in cow\u2019s milk. Many children grow out of this type of allergy but it can stay into childhood and adulthood.<\/p>\n<h3>Eggs<\/h3>\n<p>About 2% of children have an allergy to eggs.<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0Peanuts<\/h3>\n<p>One of the most common allergies, and yes it is separate from other nut varieties as it is a legume. This allergy is often lifelong.<\/p>\n<h3>Tree Nuts<\/h3>\n<p>Things like Brazil nuts, hazelnuts, pecans and cashews (among others) are all in the tree nut family.<\/p>\n<h3>Soy<\/h3>\n<p>Another common food allergy, soy comes from soybeans which is a legume (like peanuts) \u2013 some people can be allergic to just one type of legume while others are allergic to multiple.<\/p>\n<h3>Sesame<\/h3>\n<p>Usually a lifelong allergy. Can only take a small amount of the foodstuff to trigger a reaction.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are the potential intolerances in babies?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3>Gluten<\/h3>\n<p>Gluten is found in a lot of cereals, things like bread and pasta and various other foodstuffs. You can start to introduce your baby to gluten-containing food as soon as they start to ween. Start with small amounts and build up. By checking how they react you can figure out if they have an intolerance or not. It is also good to note that gluten intolerance is not the same thing as coeliac disease, which is an autoimmune disease.<\/p>\n<h3>Fructose<\/h3>\n<p>When an individual cannot create the enzyme that digests fructose, this is a fructose intolerance. It is a rare disease but, something worth being aware of and can be quite serious. The symptoms will become clear as soon as the baby starts on formula or begins to eat food.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.priyabansal.com\/fructose-intolerance.php#:~:text=Fructose%20intolerance%20is%20a%20hereditary,family%20history%20of%20the%20disorder.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Symptoms<\/a>\u00a0can range from excessive sleepiness and poor appetite to convulsions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Lactose<\/h3>\n<p>Same as in adults it is the inability to digest milk-based products that contain lactose. This is because individuals lack the enzyme lactase.
