This is most frequently caused by traumatic occurrences such as vehicle accidents, falls, sport injuries or violence, but may also be caused by tumors, infections or degenerative conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-45\">Spinal cord injury causes partial or complete loss of sensation and function below the level of the injury, commonly resulting in paralysis (paraplegia or quadriplegia), loss of bladder and bowel control, and breathing issues.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhsussex.nhs.uk\/sussex-trauma-network\/rehabilitation\/conditions\/spinal-cord-injury\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"ai-optimize-46\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What therapies are currently available?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-47\">At present, there are no known therapies that would reverse the initial injury and return an injured spinal cord to full function.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nichd.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/spinalinjury\/conditioninfo\/treatments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[2]<\/a> Current treatments for spinal cord injury focus on limiting what is called the secondary injury cascade, ideally preventing further damage and thus further loss of feeling and motor function.<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9936196\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[3]<\/a> These methods include surgery, medication, physical therapy and rehabilitation, and assistive devices such as braces or wheelchairs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"ai-optimize-48\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is epidural electrical stimulation for spinal cord injury?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-49\">In epidural electrical stimulation, an array of electrodes is implanted along the spinal cord through a surgical procedure called a laminectomy. The stimulation provided by the electrical pulses generated by these electrodes could help in the recovery of functionality following spinal cord injury, improving patients\u2019 ability to walk and stand as well as aiding with bladder and bowel control.<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9936196\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[3]<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnoh.nhs.uk\/news\/new-research-offers-quality-life-hope-many-paralysed-after-spinal-cord-injuries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[4]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"ai-optimize-50\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How could stem cells help?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-51\">By leveraging the regenerative properties of stem cells, it is hoped that a stem cell treatment could repair and regenerate damaged spinal cord tissue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-52\">This could mean protecting what neurons remain intact, repairing the protective myelin sheath on damaged ones, thus restoring their ability to conduct nerve signals, and replacing lost ones. Stem cells also have the ability to modulate the body\u2019s immune response, and could reduce inflammation and mitigate the secondary damage that follows the initial injury.<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10532158\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[5]<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-53\">There are currently several clinical trials studying the application of stem cells for spinal cord injury. Although more research is needed, results so far are promising, including the high-profile case study of a man who has regained the ability to walk.<a href=\"https:\/\/cells4life.com\/2024\/04\/stem-cells-help-injured-surfer-to-walk-again\/\">[6]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"ai-optimize-54\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What has the new study found?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-55\">Researchers at Xi\u2019an Jiaotong University, China, set out to test the effectiveness of a therapy combining both epidural electrical stimulation and stem cell injections, using a mouse model of spinal cord injury.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-024-75754-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[7]<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-56\">The study involved four different groups of mice: a group which was treated with EES alone, a group which was treated with a mix of mouse neural stem cells (NSCs) as well as human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUCMSCs), a group which received both treatments and a control group in which the spinal cord injury was left untreated. The mice in all groups were monitored and assessed for a period of two months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-57\">Following the injury, all mice had complete loss of function in their hind limbs; a week post-injury, mice in the treatment groups underwent their respective treatments. At the end of the monitoring period, mice in the control group were still unable to support themselves on their hind limbs. Conversely, some mice in the EES group were able to achieve paw standing; mice in the hUCMSC group also achieved this milestone, in a more frequent and sustained manner. Mice in the combined treatment group not only achieved paw standing, but also showed improved motor coordination. Swimming and gait analysis tests corroborated these findings, with the hUCMSC group doing better than the EES group, both doing better than the control and the combined treatment group doing best of all.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"ai-optimize-58\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What&#8217;s next?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-59\">Both EES and stem cell transplants are currently the subject of clinical trials to test their effectiveness in the treatment of spinal cord injury. But when feeling down persists for weeks, or even months, it can be a sign of a mental health condition, like depression.<\/p><p>Although today people are well versed and more understanding of depression, some sufferers still find it difficult to find treatments.<\/p><h3>What is depression?<\/h3><p>Depression is a common mental health condition. It is characterised by low mood, feelings of hopelessness, losing interest in things which previously brought a sense of enjoyment, and feeling tearful.<\/p><p>Depression can also manifest in physical ways. Sleeping poorly, feeling tired, experiencing aches, pains, a diminished appetite, and decreased libido can all be impacts of depression. The symptoms range from mild to severe. In mild cases, a persistent low mood may be the cause, while severe cases may result in suicidal feelings or a desire to self harm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/mental-health\/conditions\/depression-in-adults\/overview\/\">[1]<\/a>.<\/p><p>Sometimes the causes of depression can be obvious, such as a bereavement or a traumatic event. Other times there might be no known cause, although family history could be the reason. Whatever the reason, once a person has identified they may be depressed, they should go and see their GP.<\/p><h3>What treatments are available?<\/h3><p>There are a plethora of treatments for depression that a doctor can prescribe, from talking therapies to pharmaceutical medications to exercise and more. Sometimes the GP may recommend one treatment or a combination of treatments but they will help support patients and signpost them to services which can bolster their support network.<\/p><p>The good news is that depression is among the most treatable mental health disorders.\u00a0 Between 80% and 90% percent of people with depression eventually respond well to treatment. Almost all patients gain some relief from their symptoms <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/patients-families\/depression\/what-is-depression#:~:text=Depression%20is%20among%20the%20most,some%20relief%20from%20their%20symptoms.\">[2]<\/a>.<\/p><h3>Treatment Resistant Depression<\/h3><p>For those with major depressive disorder, however, treatment can be harder to find. With up to one third of adults with the condition failing to respond to treatment, new avenues and treatments are being sought.<\/p><p>\u201cAlthough there is some disagreement as to how to define treatment-resistant depression, a patient is generally considered to have it if the individual hasn\u2019t responded to adequate doses of two different antidepressants taken for a sufficient duration of time, which is usually six weeks,\u201d explains Jaskaran Singh, M.D., Senior Director of Neuroscience, Janssen Pharmaceuticals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jnj.com\/health-and-wellness\/4-facts-about-treatment-resistant-depression\">[3]<\/a>.<\/p><p>The theory that depression may have causes currently unknown by scientists is one theory researchers are exploring to try and combat resistance to treatment.<\/p><p>\u201cOne of the more modern theories is that depression creates inflammation in the brain, or that inflammation in the brain creates depression. Traditional antidepressants only affect neurotransmitters, so this may be why some patients don\u2019t respond to them.\u201d\u00a0 says Alexander Papp, M.D., a psychiatrist at UC San Diego Health <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jnj.com\/health-and-wellness\/4-facts-about-treatment-resistant-depression\">[4]<\/a>.<\/p><p>Whether or not this is the case, researchers are still trying to find solutions to Treatment Resistant Depression.<\/p><h3>The Potential of Cord Blood Therapy<\/h3><p>One study using umbilical cord blood cells delivered promising results. The study administered concentrated umbilical cord blood cells at a dose of 250 million cells via weekly injections over 4 weeks with 1 week intervals, to women who suffered with Treatment Resistant Depression.\u00a0 The results were tested against a control group who received a placebo.<\/p><p>The study found that the therapeutic potential of umbilical cord blood cell concentrate can be used to overcome treatment resistance formed in depressive patients <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7087609\/\">[5]<\/a>. Other studies have also found that cellular therapies may have a role in combating Treatment Resistant Depression <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1999-4923\/15\/3\/814\">[6]<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8474995\/\">[7]<\/a>.<\/p><p>These studies give hope for finding new treatments.
