This is called photoaging, or sun damage, and can take several forms:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/blog\/photoaging-what-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[2]<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/5240-sun-damage-protecting-yourself\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[3]<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yalemedicine.org\/conditions\/sun-damage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[4]<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"ai-optimize-43\"><strong>Wrinkles and skin thickening:<\/strong> UV rays break down collagen and elastin, proteins which give your skin its structure and elasticity. As a result, skin becomes thicker and wrinkled over time, beyond what would normally be caused by aging.<\/li>\n<li class=\"ai-optimize-44\"><strong>Sun spots, redness or blotchiness: <\/strong>skin cells produce melanin as a reaction to UV rays, in an attempt to protect against further sun damage. This is the same process that gives you a tan. However, over time, the damaged skin becomes permanently, unevenly pigmented, causing darker patches often called sun spots. This can also take the form of broken blood vessels, causing permanent redness or blotchiness. This happens particularly in areas frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face and hands.<\/li>\n<li class=\"ai-optimize-45\"><strong>Skin cancer:<\/strong> too much UV exposure can cause skin cancer. Overexposure to UV radiation is the cause of 86% of cases of melanoma skin cancers.<a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/14391-melanoma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[5]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"ai-optimize-46\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are extracellular vesicles?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-47\">Extracellular vesicles are tiny particles which are generated from cells. They can carry important biomolecules, like fats and proteins, to other cells, working as a messenger of sorts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-48\">Because the contents of extracellular vesicles can vary depending on the originating cells, scientists believe they could be of great importance in medicine. They could serve as a prognostic tool to predict the likely course of diseases, as well as help to cure them.<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/content\/pdf\/10.1186\/s13578-019-0282-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[6]<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-49\">In particular, extracellular vesicles derived from mesenchymal stem cells could inherit their regenerative properties, and have been <a href=\"https:\/\/cells4life.com\/2024\/10\/exosomes-what-are-they-and-why-are-they-so-exciting\/\">a recent focus of research for their therapeutic potential<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"ai-optimize-50\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What did the study find?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-51\">In the study, scientists from Peking Union Medical College, Beijing, China, aimed to investigate the effects of extracellular vesicles derived from adipose mesenchymal stem cells (AMSC-EVs) and umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (HUMSC-EVs) on photoaging.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-52\">In vitro, AMSC-EVs and HUMSC-EVs had positive effects on keratinocytes (cells which make up the outermost layer of the skin) and fibroblasts (cells which make up the connective tissue in the middle layer of the skin) that had been exposed to UV radiation. Treatment with EVs lowered inflammation and reduced the levels at which various biomarkers of senescence (aging) were present in cells. Moreover, the treatment boosted cell proliferation and migration, properties which make skin cells better able to heal damage. Similar protective and regenerative effects were also observed using an in-vitro, full-thickness model of human skin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-53\">These positive results prompted further analysis in vivo, using nude mice. The mice were randomly split into four groups, keeping one as the control. The other three groups were first exposed to high doses of UV radiation, then treated, respectively, with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) as a placebo, with AMSC-EVs and with HUMSC-EVs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-54\">All three groups exposed to UV initially developed deep, wide wrinkles. By the end of the observation period, however, the skin of mice treated with EV showed significantly fewer and thinner wrinkles. Skin analysis showed that EV treatment helped the skin recover water content, and reversed the epidermal thickening caused by UV radiation. The treatment also improved collagen and elastin levels and reduced inflammation. Additionally, there were fewer biomarkers of aging in the skin cells of treated mice.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"ai-optimize-55\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The benefits of stem cell banking<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-56\">Both types of EVs studied proved effective in mitigating photoaging. However, the researchers noted that, in the mouse model, the effects of EVs derived from umbilical cord MSCs seemed better, from a therapeutic point of view, than those of EVs derived from fat tissue MSCs. The skin of the mice in the HUMSC-EV treatment group was noticeably less wrinkled. Additionally, the skin\u2019s water content was much closer to that of the mice who had not been exposed to UV radiation at all, as was the epidermal thickness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-57\">Furthermore, the process of collecting fat tissue for therapies is inherently invasive, but must be undergone if patients wish to use autologous (their own) stem cells as a therapeutic source. Conversely, the collection of stem cells from the umbilical cord is a painless, entirely non-invasive process; however, the cord must have been collected immediately after birth, and the cells and tissues cryogenically stored for future use. people know what it\u2019s like to feel sadness. But when feeling down persists for weeks, or even months, it can be a sign of a mental health condition, like depression.<\/p><p>Although today people are well versed and more understanding of depression, some sufferers still find it difficult to find treatments.<\/p><h3>What is depression?<\/h3><p>Depression is a common mental health condition. It is characterised by low mood, feelings of hopelessness, losing interest in things which previously brought a sense of enjoyment, and feeling tearful.<\/p><p>Depression can also manifest in physical ways. Sleeping poorly, feeling tired, experiencing aches, pains, a diminished appetite, and decreased libido can all be impacts of depression. The symptoms range from mild to severe. In mild cases, a persistent low mood may be the cause, while severe cases may result in suicidal feelings or a desire to self harm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/mental-health\/conditions\/depression-in-adults\/overview\/\">[1]<\/a>.<\/p><p>Sometimes the causes of depression can be obvious, such as a bereavement or a traumatic event. Other times there might be no known cause, although family history could be the reason. Whatever the reason, once a person has identified they may be depressed, they should go and see their GP.<\/p><h3>What treatments are available?<\/h3><p>There are a plethora of treatments for depression that a doctor can prescribe, from talking therapies to pharmaceutical medications to exercise and more. Sometimes the GP may recommend one treatment or a combination of treatments but they will help support patients and signpost them to services which can bolster their support network.<\/p><p>The good news is that depression is among the most treatable mental health disorders.\u00a0 Between 80% and 90% percent of people with depression eventually respond well to treatment. Almost all patients gain some relief from their symptoms <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/patients-families\/depression\/what-is-depression#:~:text=Depression%20is%20among%20the%20most,some%20relief%20from%20their%20symptoms.\">[2]<\/a>.<\/p><h3>Treatment Resistant Depression<\/h3><p>For those with major depressive disorder, however, treatment can be harder to find. With up to one third of adults with the condition failing to respond to treatment, new avenues and treatments are being sought.<\/p><p>\u201cAlthough there is some disagreement as to how to define treatment-resistant depression, a patient is generally considered to have it if the individual hasn\u2019t responded to adequate doses of two different antidepressants taken for a sufficient duration of time, which is usually six weeks,\u201d explains Jaskaran Singh, M.D., Senior Director of Neuroscience, Janssen Pharmaceuticals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jnj.com\/health-and-wellness\/4-facts-about-treatment-resistant-depression\">[3]<\/a>.<\/p><p>The theory that depression may have causes currently unknown by scientists is one theory researchers are exploring to try and combat resistance to treatment.<\/p><p>\u201cOne of the more modern theories is that depression creates inflammation in the brain, or that inflammation in the brain creates depression. Traditional antidepressants only affect neurotransmitters, so this may be why some patients don\u2019t respond to them.\u201d\u00a0 says Alexander Papp, M.D., a psychiatrist at UC San Diego Health <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jnj.com\/health-and-wellness\/4-facts-about-treatment-resistant-depression\">[4]<\/a>.<\/p><p>Whether or not this is the case, researchers are still trying to find solutions to Treatment Resistant Depression.<\/p><h3>The Potential of Cord Blood Therapy<\/h3><p>One study using umbilical cord blood cells delivered promising results. The study administered concentrated umbilical cord blood cells at a dose of 250 million cells via weekly injections over 4 weeks with 1 week intervals, to women who suffered with Treatment Resistant Depression.\u00a0 The results were tested against a control group who received a placebo.<\/p><p>The study found that the therapeutic potential of umbilical cord blood cell concentrate can be used to overcome treatment resistance formed in depressive patients <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7087609\/\">[5]<\/a>. Other studies have also found that cellular therapies may have a role in combating Treatment Resistant Depression <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1999-4923\/15\/3\/814\">[6]<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8474995\/\">[7]<\/a>.<\/p><p>These studies give hope for finding new treatments.
