Finding out sooner rather than later if your baby might be lactose intolerant or might have an AAT deficiency could be a game-changer.

Alongside the heel prick test which already gives you great information about your baby’s health, BabyInsight is a service offered by Cells4Life that will test your baby’s pre-disposition to 5 different but manageable conditions and sensitivities.

If you’re intrigued about what this is, read on.

Intro to Genomic Screening

This is a very brief introduction to genomic screening.

Taking either a blood sample or saliva swab a lab can look at your DNA and see if there are any alterations or mutations across the genes in a genome.

These mutations can be indicative of certain health conditions and genetic disorders.

For newborns, testing early for certain predispositions can be crucial in helping you ensure your baby is healthy.

Specifics of BabyInsight

So, BabyInsight, how does it work?

This test can be done at any time in early childhood. From the day baby is born this is something you can do.

Step 1. Order your kit – it will come with all the instructions and equipment you need.

Step 2. If you are doing this in collaboration with your cord blood collection, the normal collection will take place and a small amount will be taken and used for the genomic testing. If you prefer, you can also use a swab that you rub on the inside of the baby’s cheek, pop back on the labelled tube and send it off.

Step 3. Wait for the results. Yup, it is that simple. Send it off and then wait for the results which we will then send you in a detailed email with all the information you need.

And what is being checked?

We test for the possibility that your baby may have…

  • AAT Deficiency
  • Gluten Sensitivity
  • Lactose Intolerance
  • Drug-induced Deafness
  • Hereditary Fructose Intolerance

All things that can develop in early childhood but are manageable. Having this knowledge at your disposal can be crucial in the choices you make raising your baby.

The biggest thing to note about this is that will not tell you that your child HAS a certain sensitivity but rather their likelihood of developing it.

How do I get This Test?

An optional service but well worth it, BabyInsight can be added onto a cord blood collection package or purchased on its own. Hopefully, this brief overview has shown you the benefits of this testing and how, with just a simple saliva swab, you can have important information to help your baby be happy and healthy.
